I always intended for it to be a stand-alone/promotional single because I felt it didn’t fit with the then-upcoming album. The song was made to satirically describe the life of an average teenager in lockdown whilst also implying a longing for life pre-COVID. When I wrote it, I wondered, given how topical the song was, if it would gain any traction. This would be tried and tested when I entered it into the ACMF National Songwriting Competition and it managed to win. I had nothing else to do, so, starting to take in my surroundings (if by now you’ve seen the title it’s pretty obvious) I began writing it in my head. It would take a few months before it was finally perfected lyrically but I made my first recording of it in late August that year. After I got my new guitar in December I re-recorded it; this is the version that was released. I know it’s a bit of a simple/childish-sounding song, especially now I’ve learnt so much more about songwriting, but I feel like it’s worth keeping it as a single as a result. A few months ago I came up with a chorus line that I realised could work with my own personal experiences of such a situation. The song developed and became Out on the Street. It’s actually the only song on Resignation from the Human Race that was recorded with my old Valencia (i.e. the Good Morning COVID guitar). However, lyrically, I’m proud of it and I hope one day people might stop to listen and see how it relates to them.
